- Once the Java SDKs have been installed, ensure that you have an environment variable called JDKHOME set to the base directory of your JDK 9.0.4 installation. Once this has been done, refer to the section corresponding to your specific Operating System for further instructions.

- Download and unpack a JDK archive file (.tar.gz) and add it as a SDK in the 'Project Structure' dialog box ( Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S) click on the gif to enlarge. Make sure to set an appropriate 'Project language level' as well. For Java 8 set it to 8, for Java 9 set it to 9, and so on.
Apache NetBeans can be installed on all operating systems that support Java, i.e, Windows, Linux, Mac OSX and BSD. Write Once, Run Anywhere, applies to NetBeans too.
